A replacement series for SF 68, this South African horror anthology was far more successful than its predecessor, running from 1968 through 1969. Its success may have been due in part to producer Michael McCabe - who also produced SF 68 - honing his talents to a higher degree. Little else is known about it, including the number of shows produced. As far as I can discover, there were at least 43 episodes, all in half-hour format. Currently this archive contains plotlines for 34 of 43 episodes

An Eye for an Eye Thinking release from the police means he won't suffer the consequences for a murder he committed, a man takes a job with the victim's father, a noted scientist who has some interesting experiments in mind for his new employee. Reviews: While a good radio show relies on the audience's imagination, and Beyond Midnight usually does that, there just aren't enough clues to really get you thinking for this episode. The ending offers some potential to get the audience to think, but the performance actually suffers from too much restraint to get to the listener. - Rob Mayer Cataclysm A witch's curse reaches across the centuries to take revenge on the descendants of those who executed her. Dear Ghost A writer staying at a widow's house finds himself the unwitting vehicle for her dead husband to reach back from the grave. The Happy Return A man's search around the world for his fiance's lost ship brings him to a desolate isle. 'The Upper Berth' Having fallen for a long dead woman in a portrait painting, a man gets his chance to meet her when a strange thunderstorm transports him back in time. Under the Hau Tree A mysterious traveling couple are difficult to trace, as their names are forgotten by everyone they encounter and even disappear from the hotel registry! Reviews: Yes, it's essentially a modern twist on a classic ghost story, but it demonstrates why Beyond Midnight clearly has to be listened to. Unlike like many horror/ghost/terror shows, Beyond Midnight operates with a clear sense of knowing when to be restrained and when to go over the top, particularly when it uses a narrator. That sense of restraint here allows you to be sucked and dragged into the story until you realize how far you've allowed yourself to be pulled in, even if you've already guessed the ending. - Rob Mayer The Upper Berth
