Space Patrol

was a highly successful franchise, packaged as a retro, juvenile serial featuring the adventures of the steely-jawed redoubtable Commander Buzz Corry and his wet-behind-the-ears sidekick Cadet Happy as they combat various 30th-century baddies across the Solar System and beyond. Originally a television series, the same actors reprised their roles for the radio version, which ran concurrently with the TV show from the fall of 1950 to the spring of 1955. [It is unclear when the radio series began, possibly 1952?].

The outfits and sets on the TV show were vintage cheese-ball Sci-Fi, at best laughable by even fifties' standards; however, freed of the sorry visuals, the radio incarnation comes across much better, even managing to introduce some rather sophisticated scientific concepts such as black holes, inertia-based space flight, anti-matter, and engineered space habitats. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of this series are the hilarious commercials for Chex cereal and various Space Patrol toys.

All shows are in standard half-hour format. The series was written by Lou Huston, directed by Larry Robertson, and produced by Mike Moser. At least 114 episodes, out of perhaps 129, are still in circulation. Ed Kemmer played Commander Corry and Lyn Osborn played Cadet Happy. Dick Tufeld was the announcer.

Since this was a serial, I have included a rough broadcast log. And since many of the episodes have had the credits and title cropped, making identification difficult, I have included an Index to First Lines.

Sources used to create my own log and double-check titles, dates and cast members: Jerry Haendiges' broadcast log, Crimson Collector's fan website, and IMDb.

Broadcast Log

lifted from Jerry Haendiges site. According to Mr Haendiges "Episode numbers jump from 52 to 105. There is no gap in story continuity. I suspect numbering system was changed to match previous series, but I'm not sure. There are only 149 episodes not 181." I have renumbered the series without the gap and I have changed the titles so they are consistent with this site. Also, it looks like there were 129 episodes, not 149. However, the purpose here is not to present you with a definitive radio log, but to give you some idea of the order in which the episodes were broadcast. After all, this was a serial, not an anthology; sometimes the order in which you listen matters.
